Acid Reflux
Treating Acid Reflux with Chiropractic Care
Enjoy your favorite foods without the fear of discomfort or pain. Acid reflux is an uncomfortable experience that can cause severe damage. Many people occasionally experience it, but frequent acid reflux can become a risk factor for other conditions and lead to more harmful diseases.
It can be debilitating, but chiropractic care for acid reflux effectively improves unpleasant symptoms. We focus on the proper function of the brain to ensure the adequate regulation of the digestive system.
Let’s Define Acid Reflux
When eating food or drinking a beverage, everything passes from your mouth to your stomach through a tube called your esophagus. When the food or beverage enters the stomach, a special valve of muscle fibers should close. This valve, known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, prevents the contents in your stomach from traveling back up into your esophagus.
When this valve does not close properly, the contents of your stomach leak back into your esophagus. This leakage is called reflux.
Your stomach is filled with powerful acids and enzymes that break down foods during the digestive process. The stomach is lined with special cells and coatings to withstand those acids and enzymes. However, the esophagus does not have the same protection. These acids and enzymes cause irritation, burning, and inflammation of the sensitive esophagus.
Common Symptoms
- Burning pain in the chest
- Heartburn
- Upper abdominal pain and discomfort
- Stomach fullness or bloating
- Nausea after eating
- Burping
- Difficulty swallowing
- Regurgitating acid into the throat or mouth
- A sensation that food is stuck in your esophagus
Acid Reflux and Chiropractic Care
Studies have shown that an abnormal spine curvature increases the pressure on the stomach and esophageal system. Therefore, realigning the spine may help your acid reflux, digestive function, and energy levels.
It is also common that when you have back muscle weakness with an abnormal curvature of the spine, you can develop acid reflux. When your spine is realigned to its natural form, it strengthens the back muscles.
Realignment reduces unnecessary pressure on the internal organs and allows nerve energy to flow throughout the body, and now your stomach and other internal organs return to a normal function. It’s that simple!
