Treating Asthma with Chiropractic Care

Asthma is a disorder of the airways that can occur at any age, but it’s more common in children. Symptoms highly vary. Some have occasional asthma attacks with known triggers, such as exercise or allergies. Others have symptoms all the time.

While inhalers and medications may temporarily reduce symptoms, chiropractic care addresses the underlying issue— a dysregulated nervous system.

Asthma and Stressors

The diaphragm is your primary breathing muscle. It is located under the lungs and contracts as you breathe in and out. The diaphragm is controlled by centers of the brain and nerves from the upper neck. However, nervous system stress & spinal problems can affect the nerve supply to the diaphragm.

When a person’s nervous system does not respond to stress correctly, it results in inflammation, narrowing of the airways, and dysautonomia. Our nervous system is what mediates and regulates how we respond to physical, environmental, and emotional stressors. By addressing stress stored in the nervous system, we can improve communication between the brain, the lungs, and the diaphragm.

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Wheezing while exhaling
  • Coughing

Tonal Chiropractic Adjustments

This approach looks at the overall tone of your nervous system. Is your body stuck in a sympathetic overdrive of “fight or flight” or over-exhausted from parasympathetic hibernation? Tonal chiropractic allows your body to find harmony between these two extremes while relieving abnormal tension on the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

This allows your brain and body to be more adaptable and resilient. When the nervous system runs “fight or flight” all the time, normal functions of the body can become compromised. Dr. Nathan uses a combination of MLS, Network Spinal Analysis, Biogeometric Integration, and MC2 to help your nervous system shift from stress to healing.

Zone Healing

Dr. Nathan will adjust the vertebrae in the affected area to increase your range of motion and take pressure off the spinal nerves. He will also focus on any imbalanced zones of your body.

Every cell in the body falls into at least one of the six zones: glandular, eliminative, nervous, digestive, muscular, and circulatory. Dr. Nathan will determine which zone is either out of balance or needs a boost. Not only may immune function improve, but all bodily functions may improve.

Case Study: An Infant Resolves Chronic Asthma

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health reported that a 19-month-old patient with severe chronic asthma and vertebral subluxation (a nervous system stuck in stress mode with a misaligned vertebra) found relief thanks to chiropractic care.

At nine months, the patient began experiencing symptoms of asthma. By 18 months, he had been treated four times at the emergency room for episodes of acute respiratory distress.

He suffered from constant wheezing and cough but was not responding well to pharmacological interventions. Adjustments of the cervical spine were performed on six chiropractic visits. After nine weeks, no further episodes of breathing difficulty were reported, and measures of vertebral subluxation had reduced.

This study suggests that chiropractic adjustments reduce subluxation. It may effectively reduce asthma symptoms in some pediatric cases that have not responded well to standard pharmacologic treatment.

Getting Started

Severe asthma can be life-threatening, so treating the root cause is best. Innate Life Chiropractic will perform an examination, InSight neurospinal scans, and evaluate your posture to discover where your body is out of balance.
